How to measure your head for a wig before a store fitting

Record circumference and the maker’s additional measurements in the same units.

Prepare for how you will wear it

Arrange your own hair as you intend to wear it under the wig before measuring. Use a flexible tape and open the size guide for the brand and model you are considering. Record each measurement with its units so the fitter can compare it accurately.

Record the circumference

Starting at the front hairline, follow the hairline around the head and past the nape, returning to the starting point. Keep the tape lying flat and follow the maker’s illustrated route. Repeat the measurement to catch a tape that moved or twisted.

Add the measurements the maker requests

Some guides also use front-to-back and ear-to-ear measurements. Follow that manufacturer’s landmarks, since the route matters as well as the number. Note all the results rather than guessing a size from circumference alone or from another brand’s label.

Use the numbers at a fitting

Bring your measurements and the product chart to the shop. Ask the fitter how to handle measurements that fall into different size ranges. Check the exact wig’s fit and adjustment before buying, and keep its size and model details for future orders.
