Types of hair brushes: choose for the task you need

Compare detangling, paddle and round designs, then read the product’s use instructions.

Describe the job and your hair

Tell the store whether you want to detangle, smooth or style your hair, and whether you will use the tool on wet or dry hair. Describe its length and texture. Those details help narrow the choice more effectively than selecting a brush only by its colour or size.

Compare the shape and teeth

Paddle designs offer a broad brushing surface, while round brushes are shaped for styling around a barrel. Detangling brushes use differing tooth patterns and flexibility. Compare the actual product description and ask staff to demonstrate the intended use before choosing.

Check wet-use and heat instructions

Read whether the particular brush is intended for wet hair, dry hair or both. Check separately whether it is designed for use with a dryer. A detangling brush is not automatically a heated-styling tool. If you are buying for a wig or extensions, follow their maker’s tool recommendations.

Choose a tool you can maintain

Look at how trapped hair can be removed and how the manufacturer says to clean the brush. Check the handle and access around the teeth or bristles. Keep the product instructions so you can use and clean the exact design as intended.
